Srinagar, Jan 21: Following a dip in temperatures, upper reaches of Kashmir including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, other higher reaches witnessed light to moderate snowfall, while rain lash plains in northern Kashmir. The meteorological department has forecasted that prevailing weather to continue during the next 24 hours in the region.
Director MeT Srinagar, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad told Rising Kashmir that under the influence of Western disturbances, light snowfall was reported at higher reaches, while rain lashed plains in north Kashmir on Tuesday
He said upper reaches including Sonamarg, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sadhna top, Razdan pass, Sonamarg, Doodhpatri, Yousmarg, Zojila pass ,Sinthan top, Peer ki Gali, Kilshay top and other places received moderate snowfall. Currently it is snowing over a few upper reaches and isolated places in plains.
Dr Mukhtar said that prevailing weather conditions will continue till morning of January 23rd. On 22nd Jan, weather will remain generally cloudy with possibility of light rain, snow at scattered places.
“On 23rd Jan, there is again possibility of very light Rain/light Snow at isolated places. From 24-28th Jan, weather will remain mainly dry and clear,” he added.
As per MeT data, Kashmir experienced unseasonably warm weather today, with most places recording temperatures significantly above the normal average for this time of year.
Srinagar, the region’s summer capital, reported a high of 14.9°C, which is 8.1°C above normal. Similarly, Qazigund recorded 14.6°C, surpassing the average by 8.3°C, and Kokernag reported 12.0°C, 7.0°C above normal.
Other locations also saw above-normal temperatures, including Kupwara at 11.8°C (4.5°C), Budgam at 12.9°C, and Baramulla at 12.3°C. Popular tourist spots like Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded highs of 9.4°C and 6.5°C, respectively.
As per traffic police department said that during the past 24 hours, there was slow movement observed on NH-44 due to single lane traffic at Dalwas, Mehad, between Marog and Kishtwari Pather and due to four lane construction work.
On Wednesday, subject to fair weather and better road conditions LMVs Passenger/Private Cars/HMVs shall be allowed from both sides on Jammu-Srinagar NHW (NH-44). TCU Jammu/Srinagar shall liaise with TCU Ramban for road condition.
While as Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari road and Mughal roads are closed due to fresh snowfall. Decision regarding the vehicular movement on SSG road shall be taken Wednesday after getting green signal from road maintenance agencies, the spokesman said.
