Katra, April 29: The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) and the Urban Environment Engineering Department (UEED) have joined hands to restore and rejuvenate the sacred Banganga river under a comprehensive project valued at Rs 92.10 crore. The initiative, approved under the National River Conservation Plan (NRCP) by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, aims to improve the ecological and spiritual ambience of the area through infrastructure upgrades and sustainable interventions.
A key component of the project includes the construction of a modern Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to address wastewater concerns in and around the Banganga belt. Additional features involve the development of bathing and cremation ghats, ecological restoration of embankments, revival of green spaces and promotion of a cleaner, more enriching pilgrimage experience.
Prior to the commencement of works, a joint site visit was led by Anshul Garg, Chief Executive Officer, SMVDSB, alongside senior officials from the Shrine Board, UEED, local administration and community representatives. The team interacted with local residents to incorporate their feedback and concerns into the final project design. Key issues raised included the removal of temporary sheds housing ponies—believed to be polluting the river—embankment greening, Arti revival, track widening, and the construction of a dedicated cremation ghat.
The CEO instructed that a detailed project layout be shared with stakeholders and displayed at the office of the Banganga Incharge to ensure transparency and better coordination. The Shrine Board, under the chairmanship of the Lieutenant Governor of J&K, has also initiated phased waste removal and embankment desilting as part of the rejuvenation plan. Interceptor chambers have been built to prevent the discharge of untreated water into the river, thereby safeguarding its ecological health. Conceptual projects such as the Banganga Arti and a multimedia laser show are also in the pipeline to elevate the spiritual and visual appeal of the sacred site.
