Srinagar, June 22: To ensure cleanliness and prevent littering in the city during the Eid-ul-Adha festival, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has launched a new initiative. The SMC will deploy dedicated vehicles to collect animal hides and offal from sacrificial animals directly from people’s homes free of charge within the municipal limits.

The Chief Sanitization Officer of the SMC told Rising Kashmir that they will send 2-3 hopper vehicles to each ward in the city for the collection of sacrificial waste. The department will soon announce the contact details of the officials responsible for collecting the offal and hides from different wards.

In the past, people used to deposit animal hides at mosques, religious seminaries, and orphanages, as there was a good market for them. However, due to a decline in the export business and a lack of interest from wholesale dealers, people started throwing hides and offal on roadsides, causing inconvenience and clogging drains.

Throwing offal into drains is not only disrespectful to the sacrificial animals but also goes against religious and humanitarian values. Therefore, the SMC urges people to keep the hides and offal at their homes until the hopper vehicles arrive for collection.

To minimize inconvenience to the public, the SMC will begin collecting animal waste early in the morning on Eid-ul-Azha. The SMC also warns that anyone caught throwing garbage into drains will face legal consequences.

The aim of this initiative is to promote cleanliness and hygiene in the city during the festival. By providing dedicated vehicles for the collection of animal hides and offal, the SMC hopes to prevent littering on the streets and ensure proper disposal of sacrificial waste.

It is important for everyone to cooperate and contribute to maintaining a clean environment during the festive season. By adhering to the guidelines provided by the SMC and avoiding the improper disposal of waste, residents can actively participate in keeping the city clean and free from foul odours.

The SMC’s efforts to address the issue of waste disposal demonstrate their commitment to creating a healthier and more hygienic living environment for the residents of Srinagar.
