Srinagar, June 19: The Directorate of Extension, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), Thursday inaugurated a capacity-building training programme titled “Strengthening of Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) under SFAC”, with a focus on empowering and professionalizing FPCs in Kupwara district.
The initiative marks a significant step in further strengthening the institutional framework and operational capacity of FPCs across the region. The training featured comprehensive sessions by domain experts including Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth, Dr. Raies Ahmad Bhat (Assistant Professor, Agronomy), Dr. Ghansham Das and Priyansh (Chartered Accountant). Topics covered included legal and institutional frameworks, operationalization strategies, financial management, preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), and development of market linkages and business plans.
In her welcome address, Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth, Director Extension, SKUAST-K underscored the pivotal role of FPCs as farmer-centric business entities registered under the Companies Act, designed to collectively enhance production, marketing, and income opportunities for smallholder farmers. She encouraged the CEOs and accountants of the participating FPCs to act as grassroots extension agents, ensuring effective functioning, governance, and sustainability of these entities. She further highlighted the importance of collective action, leadership and strategic planning in making FPCs viable agri-business ventures that can boost rural livelihoods and entrepreneurship.
An interactive feedback session followed the technical sessions, allowing participants to share experiences and suggestions. The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks to the dignitaries and resource persons. Reiterating the commitment, Director Extension pledged continuous handholding support to the FPCs, with the broader goal of transforming farmers into agri-entrepreneurs and strengthening rural economies across Jammu and Kashmir.
