Srinagar, Nov 19: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir organised a daylong entrepreneurship awareness program on fish processing in Degree College Banihal.
The awareness program titled ‘Fish Processing: An Entrepreneurial Opportunity for Livelihood and Income Generation’ was organized by SKUAST-K’s Division of Post Harvest Technology, Faculty of Fisheries under sponsorship of the Ministry of Micro Small & Medium Enterprise.
The program was aimed to create an entrepreneurial mindset among the youth to start their own enterprise in the field of fish processing and value addition. Dr Inaytullah Chesti Head, Division of Aquaculture SKUAST-K gave a detailed presentation on entrepreneurship opportunities in Fish culture and its importance. Dr Faisal Rashid, Programme Coordinator, gave an overview about Value chain of fish and business models.
Principal Government Degree College Banihal Prof Bashir Ahmad expressed sincere gratitude to the Faculty of Fisheries, SKUAST-K for such an important awareness programme and emphasized on the participants to take advantage of the programmes to strengthen their skills and means of livelihood.
Holds one-week training on pesticide residues and quality analysis
A weeklong training program on pesticide residues and quality analysis of food concluded at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir, Shalimar campus.
The training titled “Pesticide Residues and Quality Analysis Using HPLC, GC-ECD, GC-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS, ICP-MS/MS” was organised by SKUAST-K’s Research Centre for Residue and Quality Analysis (RCRQA) under the World Bank-ICAR funded National Agricultural Higher Education Project (NAHEP). Head, RCRQA, Dr Mehraj D Shah, in his valedictory address, gave an overview of the training program. He said MSc and PhD students from different academic institutions of Jammu and Kashmir, HP and Punjab attended the training. Prof Shabir A Wani, Dean, Faculty of Horticulture, SKUAST-K who chaired the function, talked about pesticide residue in food and food commodities and the judicious use of pesticides in agriculture, horticulture, food and food products to minimize the pesticide residue in them for the safety of human health and environment. Dr AH Mughal, Associate Director Research, SKUAST-K complimented the Head, RCRQA and associated team for organizing such training programs and gave the importance of the pesticide residue and quality analysis in food and food products, especially for export markets.
RCRQA is one of the best laboratories in India and at par with international standards with a state-of-art facility providing various services to the stakeholders throughout the country on pesticide and antibiotic residue, heavy metal, toxin and quality analysis. RCRQA has well-trained scientific and technical staff and is one of the Coordinating Centres in the All India Network Project on Pesticide Residues and is included in the Monitoring of Pesticide Residue at National Level (MPRNL) scheme under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Govt. of India. The event ended with the vote of thanks by Dr Shahid A Padder, Scientist, RCRQA-SKUAST-Kashmir.
Organises industrial exposure visit for BVSc students
Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir organised organized an industry exposure tour for 3rd year BVSc & AH professional students of Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry.
The students were exposed to the tannery and bone rendering industry in the industrial area of Lassipora Pulwama. Animal byproduct processing forms an important component of the course curriculum of 3rd Year BVSc & AH Degree programme. Going beyond the boundaries of theory-based teaching, the students were imparted with an on-site industry-based practical demonstration of different operations of skin/pelt processing and bone rendering process. The students were accompanied by Dr Sheikh Rafeh Ahmad, Dr Heena Jalal, Dr Sadiya Sajad, Dr Tahir Nazir and Dr Asma Quereshi. Dr Asif H Sofi, Head, Division of Livestock Products Technology, FVSc & AH thanked the Managing Directors of M/s B A Ravanda and M/s Kashmir Bone Mills for their cooperation and for allowing students to visit their setups.
