Srinagar, Jan 09: The Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura, Kashmir’s largest multi-specialty tertiary care hospital, has reported a significant increase in stroke cases over the past two months.
Dr. Ravouf Parvez Asimi, Professor and Head of the Department of Neurology at SKIMS, revealed that the hospital received 60 stroke patients in November, 87 in December, and around 20 cases in January so far.
“In May, June, and July, we recorded 150 stroke cases, with 36 percent being hemorrhagic strokes and 17 percent ischemic strokes. Currently, our 32-bed neurology ward remains occupied with 20–25 stroke patients daily, reflecting a rise in both types of strokes,” he said.
Dr. Asimi attributed the increase to cold and dry weather conditions, advising people to wear multilayered clothing, stay hydrated, and consume fruits and vegetables.
“Dehydration can elevate blood pressure, particularly in hypertensive and diabetic individuals, increasing the risk of strokes and cardiac arrests. Regular exercise is also essential to stay active and healthy,” he added.
He cited a study from Japan indicating a link between low winter rainfall and higher stroke incidence. “Dehydration and low water intake lead to blood thickening, which can contribute to strokes,” Dr. Asimi explained.
Doctors at the institute are urging people to adopt precautionary measures to reduce risks and save lives.
“People should drink plenty of water, increase their intake of fruits and fluids, and maintain physical activity during winter to reduce stroke risks and improve overall health,” he said.
A year ago, Health Department Kashmir started the ‘Save Brain Initiative’ in district hospitals that are equipped with a computed tomography (CT) facility to manage stroke patients.
Experts say early treatment of acute ischemic stroke within 4.5 hours with intravenous tissue plasminogen activator reduces neurological impairment and disability. The health department has trained its doctors at the Regional Health and Family Welfare Institute Dhobiwan, Tangmarg on how to treat a stroke.
As part of the Save Brain Initiative, a WhatsApp group similar to “Save Heart Kashmir” has been created, where senior doctors provide live suggestions around the clock.
