Srinagar, August 19: The Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Srinagar has upgraded its emergency and is planning to have guidelines and standard operating procedure (SOP) for all emergencies.

“Senior nurses have been relocated and adjusted at the emergency department. It will also help in proper care to the patients. Earlier there was a problem as Junior Residents were posted in the emergency and they would hardly make any decisions for patients,” an official said.

He said that the institute is planning to have guidelines and standard operating procedure (SOP) for all the common emergencies for which doctors would be given training.
“There will be a proper algorithm for what to do next in case of any emergency case and the concerned doctor will automatically know what is the best step and these algorithms will be there after a workshop,” the director said.
The institute has also proposed a new building for its trauma centre and emergency which in the long run will add to the patient care at the largest tertiary care hospital.
“We are working on how to make emergencies better and tackle the huge rush. We will take the required measures to ensure that the SKIMS emergency is better,” he said.
On a daily basis, SKIMS emergency bears a huge brunt of patients from hospitals and across different parts of Kashmir valley.
Being one of the largest tertiary care hospitals, SKIMS alone receives nearly 19,000 referral cases per year just like other tertiary care hospitals in the city.
