Srinagar, Jan 23: Emphasising a significant improvement in the law and order situation in Jammu and Kashmir , Director General of Police, R.R. Swain on Tuesday said that the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir is under control despite the challenges being posed by a few terrorists infiltrating from across the border. He stated that the youth are not supporting such attempts.
DGP Swain was talking to media persons on the sidelines of a Public Grievances Redressal Programme at Awantipora in south Kashmir.
DGP Swain highlighted the issue of cross-border infiltration posing a significant challenge to the security forces. Few terrorists are infiltrating from outside.
“They, in collaboration with some elements, are trying to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere here. It poses a challenge – one that we approach from a unique perspective,” he said.
“We view it in the context of our own local youth not aligning with them, or a relatively smaller number doing so. While there may be a few who sympathise with them, the majority of the public does not. This aspect is crucial when we assert that we have control over the security situation,” DGP Swain said.
About targeted attacks in Union Territory, the DGP said approximately 90 per cent of the root cause of the problem originates from outside J&K.
“A person situated outside, not belonging to Jammu and Kashmir, often a Pakistani, manages to come here, either through infiltration or by digging tunnels, and then engages in confrontations with us. It poses a formidable challenge. Although their numbers have decreased, it remains an ongoing challenge,” he said.
DGP Swain said that the cross-border infiltration presents difficulties in Poonch-Rajouri and, to some extent, in other areas.
“The overall atmosphere improves gradually, the local community will play a crucial role in helping us control the situation. We are optimistic that people themselves will cooperate in identifying and handing over those involved,” he said.
DGP Swain said it was the second rural outreach event in South Kashmir after success in Kupwara. The event provided a platform for individuals to raise various concerns, spanning from instances of cheating to land grabbing, he said.
During this outreach initiative, the DGP Swain assured prompt and lawful action, emphasising the police’s dedication to addressing issues beyond the traditional realm of security.
“This is the first time we are extending our outreach to South Kashmir. Collaborative efforts are aimed at promoting peace in the Rajouri-Poonch belt. We believe that there will come a time when Jammu and Kashmir will experience peace, and the community will actively assist in apprehending those attempting to disrupt the peace by handing them over to us,” he added.
