Jammu, July 23: Jammu and Kashmir’s ace international fencers Shreya Gupta and Vishal Thapar have been selected to represent India at the World Fencing Championship scheduled to be held in Tbilisi, Georgia, from July 23 to July 30.A statement issued here said that the duo earned their spots in the prestigious tournament following their impressive performances at the recent Asian Fencing Championship held in Bali, Indonesia, where both secured top-eight rankings in the sabre category. Their selection is a testament to their rigorous training, unwavering dedication, and consistent performances at both national and international levels. Known for regularly bringing laurels to Jammu and Kashmir, both Shreya and Vishal expressed confidence in delivering strong performances at the world stage.The J&K Amateur Fencing Association hailed the fencers’ achievement, terming their selection as a proud moment for the Union Territory. Association President Nisha Sharma and General Secretary Bhanu Vijay Sharma congratulated the athletes for their dedication and hoped they would continue to shine at the global level. Secretary of J&K Sports Council, Nuzhat Gull, also commended the efforts of the fencers and said their selection has brought pride to the region. She emphasised that J&K is brimming with sporting talent, and that the Lieutenant Governor’s Administration is committed to supporting athletes with all necessary infrastructure and encouragement. “The selection of Shreya and Vishal is a proud milestone for the Union Territory. Their success showcases the immense talent we have and reinforces our commitment to nurturing excellence in sports,” said Nuzhat Gull.The World Fencing Championship is expected to feature top athletes from across the globe, and the participation of J&K’s fencers will surely inspire many aspiring sportspersons from the region.
