Pulwama, Dec 04: A 50-year-old shopkeeper from Kalampora village in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district sustained injuries in an acid attack on Tuesday evening in the Shadimarg area.
The victim, a father of three, is undergoing treatment at SKIMS Soura in Srinagar after receiving initial care at CHC Rajpora.
According to family members, the incident occurred around 6:50 PM when the victim, after closing his shop at Shadimarg, went to buy chocolates from a local store in the village market.
They said a stone was first hurled at him, and as he turned to investigate, he was attacked with acid.
According to the family members the victim suffered severe burns on his lower face and back.
The victim’s sister, speaking to the media, described the injuries as grave and called for stringent punishment for the perpetrator.
“This is a horrific crime. My brother has three unmarried children, and such acts must be deterred with strict action,” she said.
Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) in the case and launched an investigation. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pulwama, PD Nitya, stated that initial findings indicate the attack may have stemmed from personal rivalry. “The police are making every effort to arrest the culprit at the earliest,” she assured.
Meanwhile, Apni Party President, Altaf Bukhari denounced this incident.
“It is horrifying that a 50-year-old man was attacked with acid in Pulwama. One feels deeply saddened to see that the valley, once known as ‘Peer Vear’ for the sober and peaceful nature of its people, is now frequently in the news for crimes and other distressing incidents across various areas. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must be apprehended and brought to justice as soon as possible,” he posted on X.
