Baramulla, Apr 28: Police on Friday arrested a man for alleged voyeurism after a minor girl discovered a hidden mobile phone in a changing room of a readymade shop in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
The victim, whose name has been withheld, filed a complaint at Police Station Chandoosa on April 26, 2023. She was accompanied by her sister.
A police official said the victim reported that she selected clothes at the shop owned by Aijaz Ahmad Sofi, son of Ghulam Nabi Sofi, a resident of Bandi Payeen Chandoosa, and entered the changing room for a trial.
“Upon entering the room, she discovered a hidden mobile phone that was used to secretly record customers changing clothes,” the official said.
Following the complaint, police registered a case under sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Information Technology Act, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
A team led by SHO Police Station Chandoosa, Inspector Irfan Ahmad and supervised by SDPO Kreeri, Khalid Aahraf-JKPS was constituted to investigate the matter.
“The accused, Aijaz Ahmad Sofi, was taken into custody immediately, and his mobile devices were seized during the investigation,” the police official said, adding that further investigation is underway.
Police have appealed to the people to be cautious while using trial rooms.
