Bandipora, Apr 03: Sheep Husbandry Department Bandipora on Monday organised a district-level training programme under Holistic Agriculture Development Plan regarding self-sufficiency in mutton production in which experts from SKUAST Kashmir, KVK Bandipora and Gurez, and departmental professionals participated.
Speaking on the occasion, the guest of the event Professor and Head Division of Animal Breeding and Genetics SKUAST-K Dr Syed Shahnaz educated the audience about the HADP project as a whole and self-sufficiency in mutton production in J&K in particular.
She briefed the audience about various aspects of the project and its potential in transforming, upgrading and revolutionizing the sheep husbandry sector with interventions like the importation of best-quality sheep breeds from New Zealand and Australia and their genetic propagation in the field through techniques like artificial insemination and embryo transfer technology.
Dr Shahnaz spoke about the vast employment generation potential of the project in the sheep sector with the establishment of numerous large commercial units in the next five years and the establishment of industrial units based on the processing of wool, mutton and utilization of byproducts. She received queries from the learned audience and responded to them gracefully and satisfactorily.
The experts from KVK briefed the audience about different aspects of the project and ways for its smooth execution and implementation for the larger benefit of farmers.
District Agriculture Officer Bandipora, who is also the District Nodal officer for the programme, apprised the audience about the implementation of the HADP programme at the grassroots panchayat level.
The conclusion was marked by the address of District Sheep Husbandry Officer Bandipora Dr Showkat Ahanger. He hoped for smooth and quality implementation of the programme in the district for the welfare of the farming community and reposed faith that the project will prove a watershed in the development of the sheep husbandry sector in Jammu & Kashmir. Sheep and Wool Development Officer Hajin Dr Nuzhat Wali presented a vote of thanks.
