Checkpoints set up to thwart untoward incidents
CAPF’s deployment for 1st phase completed: Officials
Srinagar, Sept 04: With the first phase of Assembly elections just around the corner, security arrangements have been tightened across Jammu and Kashmir. Additional security personnel have been deployed on highways and vital road links in Srinagar and adjacent districts to prevent any untoward incidents.
Sources said that multiple checkpoints have been set up along the Srinagar-Jammu highway to monitor commuters, with frisking intensified at major spots. Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have been deployed in a phase-wise manner, with all companies arriving for the first phase.
“The CAPFs will be deployed in phase wise for the elections and for the first phase, all companies arrived and were deployed accordingly. It includes the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), SashastraSeemaBal (SSB), and National Security Guard (NSG),” a police official said said.
The deployment of CAPF personnel will not only provide security at polling stations but also assist local police in maintaining law and order in areas prone to disturbances. Round-the-clock patrolling of all routes is being conducted by forces personnel during the daytime and through 360-degree camera-fitted Mobile Bunker Vehicles (MBVs) at night,” sources further added.
Special measures have been taken for critical polling locations in south Kashmir, with strategies devised to ensure heightened security measures at these key sites. In Jammu, troops deployment along the Jammu-Udhampur highway and vital junctions has been completed, with multiple checkpoints set up to monitor commuters.
Quick Response Teams (QRTs) and other units will remain active, with inter-district checkpoints set up to ensure a safe environment for polls.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Zone V.K. Birdi has directed officials to identify gap areas and address issues at the earliest.
The top police official briefed participating officers regarding overall election preparedness and the arrival of CAPFs to the UT of J&K. District police chiefs have been instructed to ensure proper logistic and transportation arrangements for CAPF personnel.
These are the first assembly elections to be held in Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370. The Election Commission of India has announced that Jammu and Kashmir has 88.06 lakh eligible electors, with 90 assembly constituencies, including 7 reserved for SCs and 9 for STs.
