Srinagar, Aug 08: Security forces on Tuesday intensified frisking and surveillance measures across the Valley to ensure smooth conduct of the forthcoming Independence Day.
In a joint effort led by the local police and paramilitary personnel, security arrangements have been significantly bolstered throughout Srinagar.
Checkpoints have been set up at strategic locations to keep a check on inimical elements. The presence of security personnel has been increased around hyper-sensitive locations.
A senior police officer told Rising Kashmir that joint teams of security forces are working round-the-clock to maintain vigil and mock drills were conducted on Monday.
“Random checks of vehicles were conducted in many parts of Srinagar including Lal Chowk, Hari Singh High Street and other places. Apart from ground surveillance, we are utilising advanced technology for surveillance purposes. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras have been installed at key locations to monitor movement of commuters and vehicles,” he said.
The official said that vigil was intensified as drones were being used in and around the city centre Lal Chowk. The bomb disposal squads and sniffer dogs have also been kept ready, he said.
“The heightened security measures may cause minor inconveniences, they are deemed necessary to ensure the safety and security of everyone participating in the Independence Day celebrations,” he said. The police officer said new security strategy has already been formulated, and as a result, the deployment will be maintained to ensure the smooth execution of the event across J&K. He said security checkpoints will remain operational, including those along the major highway in the Valley, as a precautionary step to prevent any unfavourable occurrences.
Last week, a comprehensive review meeting of security arrangements discussed strategies to thwart any potential security threats and ensure the safety of citizens participating in the celebrations. Officials from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), and various intelligence agencies shared insights into their respective security plans. The focus was on crowd management, traffic regulation, and the deployment of personnel in key areas to prevent any untoward incidents.
