Ganderbal, June 05: Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) CEO, Ilyas Ahmad, announced plans to enhance cleanliness and preserve the natural beauty of Sonamarg by installing additional dustbins along the banks of Nallah Sindh and other popular spots. Speaking on World Environment Day, Ahmad emphasized the need to raise awareness about environmental issues and the importance of living in harmony with nature.
Under the campaign slogan “Only One Earth,” the CEO stressed the significance of protecting the environment from escalating pollution, considering the vast number of galaxies and planets in the universe. He highlighted the existing dustbins in Sonamarg but emphasized the forthcoming installation of more bins to discourage littering and preserve the pristine charm of the destination.
Ahmad further revealed ongoing efforts to ensure a clean environment in Sonamarg, aiming to provide a hassle-free experience for tourists and residents alike. He mentioned the solid waste management plant in Sarbal, which currently has a capacity of 11 tons and disposes of 7 to 8 metric tons of scientific minerals daily.
Recognizing the vital role of a healthy environment in human survival, the CEO urged every citizen to contribute to clean and pollution-free surroundings. He encouraged tree planting as a means to foster a healthy life and emphasized the collective responsibility of the local community to safeguard and improve the natural environment, including forests, lakes, rivers, and wildlife.
The World Environment Day event saw the participation of various organizations and stakeholders, such as the forest department, wildlife department, Sonamarg guide association, Sonamarg development authority’s casual laborers, tourist police, students and teachers from High School Sonamarg, SHO Sonamarg, tourism department officials, hotel owners, and Project Director of Jammu Kashmir Eco-watch & national campaigner green Bilal Bhat. These participants were enlightened about the detrimental effects of plastic pollution, raising awareness among students, locals, and tourists alike.
