Srinagar, Aug 28: The scrutiny of nomination papers for the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections 2024 has been completed, with 244 out of 279 nominations declared valid. The scrutiny, conducted on August 28, covered 24 constituencies across seven districts. A total of 35 nominations were rejected during this process.
The nomination process began on August 20 and concluded with scrutiny on August 28. Candidates have until August 30, 2024, to withdraw their nominations by 3:00 pm in the offices of the respective Returning Officers.
The constituencies included in this phase are Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Pulwama, Doda, Ramban, and Kishtwar.
In Anantnag district, 67 nominations were accepted; Pulwama saw 46 valid nominations; Doda had 34; Kishtwar 29; Kulgam 26; Shopian 21; and Ramban 21. In specific constituencies, the breakdown is as follows: In Kishtwar district, 12 nominations were accepted in 48-Inderwal AC, 10 in 49-Kishtwar AC, and 7 in 50-Padder-Nagseni AC. In Doda district, 14 nominations were valid in 51-Bhadarwah AC, 11 in 52-Doda AC, and 9 in 53-Doda West AC. Ramban district saw 12 valid nominations in 54-Ramban AC and 9 in 55-Banihal AC. In Pulwama district, 14 nominations were accepted in 32-Pampore AC, 10 in 33-Tral AC, 12 in 34-Pulwama AC, and 10 in 35-Rajpora AC. Shopian district had 10 valid nominations in 36-Zainapora AC and 11 in 37-Shopian AC. Kulgam district saw 6 nominations in 38-DH Pora AC, 10 in 39-Kulgam AC, and 10 in 40-Devsar AC. Anantnag district had 12 valid nominations in 41-Dooru AC, 10 in 42-Kokernag (ST) AC, 10 in 43-Anantnag West AC, 13 in 44-Anantnag AC, 3 in 45-Srigufwara-Bijbehara AC, 13 in 46-Shangus-Anantnag East AC, and 6 in 47-Pahalgam AC.
More than 23.27 lakh voters, including 5.66 lakh youths, are eligible to vote in this phase. The electorate comprises 11.76 lakh male voters, 11.51 lakh female voters, and 60 third-gender electors. Prominent candidates for this phase include senior Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir, former J&K Congress President Vikar Rasool, Iltija Mufti (Media Advisor to former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti), and CPI(M) leader M.Y. Tarigami, among others. The first phase of polling is scheduled for September 18, 2024, with the counting of votes set for October 4, 2024.
