Srinagar, Dec 23: Following a rise in the price of Kashmiri roti from Rs 5 to Rs 10, residents of the Kashmir Valley have urged the Government to address the issue, as many individuals find it difficult to afford this new price for their daily bread.

Kulsum Jan, a customer from the Beerwah area told Rising Kashmir that in recent days, Kashmiri bread makers across various areas of Budgam district have unilaterally raised the price of Kashmiri roti to Rs 10 without prior notice to the local populace.

“Many individuals living below the poverty line in different areas of the Kashmir Valley cannot afford to spend Rs 50 for five Kashmiri rotis, which previously cost only Rs 25,” she said.

Kulsum further said that while a modest increase of Rs 1, representing a 10 percent rise, would be reasonable, the current adjustment reflects a staggering 100 percent hike imposed arbitrarily.

Sajad Ahmad, another customer from the Srinagar district, expressed concern that the 100 percent increase in the price of Kashmiri bread has rendered it unaffordable for many, particularly those earning between Rs 200 and Rs 300 daily during this harsh winter season.

“With the onset of winter, many construction works have ceased, leaving numerous individuals without work. The Government must take immediate action to establish a fair price that allows everyone to purchase Kashmiri roti from local bakers on a daily basis,” Ahmad said.
