Many centuries in the past, communities demonstrated a deep understanding of harnessing renewable resources, employing wind and water power for various needs. This early acknowledgment of the possibilities of sustainable energy marked the first steps toward a more environmentally friendly future. Nevertheless, the advent of the Industrial Revolution brought about a notable transition towards plentiful and affordable fossil fuels, leading to a prolonged reliance on non-renewable energy sources.

The turning point arrived in the 1970s, a decade marked by an energy crisis that reverberated globally. This crisis served as a wake-up call, triggering a reassessment of energy sources and renewing interest in harnessing renewables. Governments worldwide initiated investments in research and development, laying the groundwork for a renewed commitment to renewable energy in the 21st century.

On the global stage, India emerged as a key player in the pursuit of green energy. The nation’s journey commenced in the 1980s with the establishment of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), a pivotal step recognizing the importance of sustainable alternatives. Initiatives focusing on biogas, solar, and wind energy gained momentum, reaching a significant trajectory in the 2000s.

Policy support played a vital role in propelling India’s renewable energy sector. The Renewable Energy Policy of 2005 established crucial frameworks for sustainable practices, setting the stage for an environmentally conscious approach to energy generation. The launch of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) in 2010 provided a strategic roadmap for solar power, accelerating the nation’s progress in renewable energy.

In the past decade, India’s renewable energy sector experienced unprecedented growth. Technological advancements, coupled with cost reductions and government support, positioned the country as a fast-growing player in the global green energy landscape. This ascent underscored India’s commitment to a more sustainable energy paradigm.

In this historical context, the recent breakthrough by IIT Jammu’s Department of Mechanical Engineering stands out. Their green hydrogen-based fuel cell-powered car aligns with India’s commitment to clean energy and sustainable mobility. The innovation incorporates cutting-edge technologies: the hydrogen-based Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell, a strategically designed hydrogen storage tank, and an efficient DC-DC converter (Rising Kashmir, November 25, 2023). These components create an eco-friendly mode of transportation addressing environmental concerns and marking a leap in electric vehicle practicality.

A standout feature is the substantial reduction in charging time, a crucial factor in electric vehicle adoption. IIT Jammu’s team cut the charging time from eight hours to five minutes, showcasing efficiency and convenience in sustainable transportation solutions. This development aligns with the goal of making green technology more accessible, a crucial step in the global transition towards sustainability.

Beyond the vehicle, IIT Jammu’s research group contributes to green hydrogen technology. They developed a solar energy-driven hydrogen generation facility, offering an innovative and sustainable method. Additionally, a customized DC-DC converter and a hydrogen refuelling system showcase a holistic approach to sustainable energy solutions. Ongoing projects, like a medium-pressure hydrogen compressor, solidify India’s position in sustainable energy.

In the global pursuit of sustainable energy, IIT Jammu’s accomplishments reflect India’s commitment to innovative problem-solving. The institute marks a turning point in India’s transition to a greener future through cutting-edge research in sustainable energy solutions.

As India plays a crucial role globally in transitioning to sustainable energy, IIT Jammu’s achievements resonate nationally and internationally. Their efforts exemplify the nation’s prowess in advancing environmentally conscious technologies, contributing significantly to a cleaner and greener future. In this interconnected world, where nations share responsibility for environmental challenges, IIT Jammu’s contributions extend beyond borders, influencing the trajectory towards a sustainable and eco-friendly future.
