Holocaust and Genocide are the words that showcase the reality of Jammu and Kashmir in 1947 when tribesmen from the frontier areas of Pakistan launched an attack on the erstwhile princely state to annex it for the Pakistani Army. It was an act of war launched by Pakistan in the aftermath of the partition of India to grab the princely state. It was not a tribal invasion as has been made to believe .It was a full-fledged war inflicted on India with Pakistan Army leading it .Many Pakistani Army soldiers and officers were sent on leave to lead the tribals and indulge in plunder, rape, arson and loot of the people in Jammu and Kashmir. So that they are forced into submission. In fact it was the precursor to the future events that eclipsed Jammu and Kashmir for a long time. Even today its fallout can be witnessed in the form of terrorism that devastated the people in Jammu and Kashmir and people have not been able to come out from this siege. When the last ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, Maharaja Hari Singh was denied timely military help by New Delhi on technical grounds. He was asked to sign the Instrument of Accession so that the Indian Armed Forces could be rushed to rescue the people of Kashmir from the marauders who spared none in this criminal act. Maharaja had entered into standstill agreement with the new dominions of India and Pakistan. Pakistan exploited the situation. Pakistani establishment knew that all the land routes that connected the state of Jammu and Kashmir went through the newly created Pakistani territories. Jammu and Kashmir was land locked. When Maharaja Hari signed the Instrument of Accession, Pakistani invaders had entered the Srinagar and choked the life and lifelines. The Battle of Shalteng will be marked as decisive act in military history of India that sealed the fate of Jammu and Kashmir and Indian Army managed to retrieve the Srinagar and the major installations from the barbaric hordes pushed into the state. People of all hues were subjected to genocide by the zealots from tribal areas and their Pakistani army patrons. It didn’t happen overnight. The situation was brewing from quite a long time as the plan for partition was being materialised in the rest of India. It consolidated the forces that wanted to destabilise India in the garb of partition. In Jammu and Kashmir Maharaja Hari Singh had the reports that there was infiltration and conspiracies going on in state forces. It was being done at the behest of the British officials who wanted to destabilise Jammu and Kashmir. They infiltrated the subversives into the state and disturbed the social equilibrium. The most vulnerable areas that witnessed the subversion and sedition were Poonch and Rajouri. These were non Kashmiri speaking areas. The soldiers from this area revolted against the Maharaja and fanned communal tensions. These were the war veterans from these areas and surprisingly soldiers who had worked in Indian National Army of Subhas Chandra Bose who fanned the communal tensions and were hand in glove with the Pakistani Army. There is enough archival material to substantiate this conspiracy. When Indian Army drove away the Pakistani mercenary tribes from Jammu and Kashmir or were on the verge of retrieving whole Jammu and Kashmir from their clutches, cease fire was imposed that proved to be inimical to India. As the substantial part of the erstwhile princely state of Jammu and Kashmir remained under the occupation of Pakistan. There were the areas that had orchestrated the revolt under the leadership of the Maharaja’s state forces. The people who led the revolt and plunder with the support of Pakistani Army declared the so called Azad Kashmir Government. These areas are essentially and in all technicality the areas known as Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir(POJK).Pakistan has been deliberately calling these areas as Kashmiri speaking. Which they are not. These are predominantly the non –Kashmiri speaking areas. Pakistan wants to misguide the international community by terming these areas as Kashmiri speaking. Pakistan has changed the demography of these occupied areas and it has led to the wide spread protests and disenchantment. The internal simmering in these areas is for release from the Pakistani predominance. The areas under the Pakistani occupation also include the frontier areas of Gilgit and Baltistan that were annexed by Pakistan with British intrigues. It caused a grave human problem and led to the genocide of people who were made to flee their native homelands into the areas taken back by the Indian Army. People in lakhs were turned into refugees overnight and they are still languishing in exile for justice. These POJK refugees sought refuge in the Jammu and Kashmir saved from the marauders on Indian side losing their assets in POJK. Pakistan has been using these occupied areas of Jammu and Kashmir as launching pads for terrorism to annex Jammu and Kashmir constantly. After the neutralisation of Article 370 and 35 A and mainstreaming the state with the mainland India. There is a hope that the POJK areas will be taken back and the POJK refugees will be given their due share that has been denied to them .Maharaja Hari Singh had acceded the entire princely state of Jammu and Kashmir to India and as such legally and constitutionally the occupied areas have to be retrieved by India. Entire Jammu and Kashmir is the Indian Territory. To uphold this constitutional reality the Indian Parliament unanimously passed the resolution on 22nd February 1994.It was adopted by the both houses of the Parliament. Resolving that the entire Jammu ,Kashmir and Ladakh have been, are and shall be an integral part of India. The former Prime Minister,P .V.Narasimha Rao at time was instrumental in enabling this resolution and upholding the national will. Recognising his contribution he has been awarded this year with the highest national honour -Bharat Ratna. This is a clear indication that the nation is resolute in implementing this resolve to safeguard the territorial integrity and sovereignty in Jammu and Kashmir. Operationalizing this 1994 resolve will secure the Northern frontier of India in the Himalayas and neutralise the forces that are acting to balkanise India and destabilise Jammu and Kashmir. Thus 22nd February is a historic day that must remind all nationalists to work for the national goal of taking back POJK and redouble the vigour to take back all areas of Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistan that it has illegally and forcefully occupied.
