PwD voters defy odds, make their voices heard in exercising rights

Srinagar, Apr19:Braving incessant rains, Persons with Disabilities (PWD) voters in various parts of Kathua, Udhampur, Doda, and Ramban districts on Friday reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to exercising their voting rights, transcending age barriers and physical challenges.
Ninety-four-year-old Sham Devi, who cast her vote in Paristan village of Ramban, emphasized the importance of every vote, stating, “Irrespective of age or physical challenges, every vote counts.” She lauded the seamless arrangements and expressed satisfaction with the accessibility measures at the polling station.
The State Welfare Department (SWD) in Ramban took proactive steps by providing 196 wheelchairs at polling stations, ensuring that no individual faced hindrances in exercising their constitutional right.
MohdRafiqDaing, a PwD voter in Ramban, extended heartfelt gratitude to the Election Department, DEO Ramban, and the Social Welfare Department for their efforts in facilitating PwD voters. He emphasized that inclusivity in democracy ensures all voices are heard.
Priya Singh, a PwD voter from ChenaniSewna village of Udhampur district, commended the support and assistance provided by polling staff. Despite facing challenges, she highlighted the determination of PwD voters to participate in the democratic process.
Sonia Gupta, a first-time voter with a disability from Doda, expressed gratitude for the accessibility measures, stating that they made her feel empowered and valued. She emphasized the importance of ensuring equal opportunities for all citizens.
Dharminder Singh of Golibhag village in Doda echoed similar sentiments, expressing happiness at being able to cast his vote with assistance from the District Election Authority.
Adequate arrangements were in place for smooth elections, with polling stations opening at 7 am and closing at 6 pm.
