Srinagar, Aug 21: The PM SHRI Schools in Jammu & Kashmir are transforming the educational landscape by providing students with hands-on experience in various innovative activities, thanks to the innovation labs established in these institutions.
An official from Samagra Shiksha Jammu & Kashmir informed Rising Kashmir that the PM SHRI Schools scheme, funded by the Government of India, aims to uplift over 14,500 educational institutions nationwide.
In the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, 233 existing schools were initially approved under the PM SHRI Schools program, followed by an additional 156 schools in the second phase and 7 schools in the third phase.
“Currently, we have 396 PM SHRI Schools operating throughout Jammu and Kashmir,” the official said. “These institutions are equipped with innovation labs designed to enhance students’ understanding and application of innovative practices.”
To complement academic learning, the PM SHRI Schools also focus on practical knowledge through kitchen gardens, where students gain experience in growing fresh vegetables. He said that the produce from these gardens is used in the students’ midday meals, adding a sustainable element to their education.
Students from grades 9 to 12 in these schools also receive vocational education, further preparing them for future career opportunities.
Moreover, all PM SHRI Schools have been designated as Green Schools, maintaining a plastic-free environment.
In the 233 schools approved in the first phase, vermicomposting pits have been constructed to recycle biodegradable waste, which is then used to enrich the soil in the kitchen gardens. Similar facilities will be constructed in the remaining schools approved in the subsequent phases, along with the implementation of rainwater conservation measures.”
“In PM SHRI Schools, there will be improvements beyond just aesthetics; the overall learning experience will be significantly enhanced,” the official said. “These institutions will provide a supportive learning environment equipped with adequate physical infrastructure and necessary resources. The objective is to deliver high-quality education to every student.”
The official also highlighted that PM SHRI Schools will serve as model institutions for implementing the National Education Policy 2020, showcasing best practices and emerging as exemplary schools over time.
