Srinagar, Oct 27: Around 6.5 million people die of stroke each year, with 12 million new cases globally. In 2021, India contributed 1.25 million new stroke cases, accounting for 10 percent of the worldwide burden. On World Stroke Day, Paras Health Srinagar showcases recent advancements in interventional neurology and neurosurgery, reflecting the hospital’s commitment to elevating brain and spine care in Kashmir.
Led by Dr. Hilal Ahmad Ganaie, Associate Director of Neurology and Neurointervention, the interventional neurology team recently prevented a near-fatal stroke by treating a patient with a 99% blockage in the left internal carotid artery (ICA). Using Carotid Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA), the blockage was identified and successfully treated with Carotid Angioplasty and Stenting, restoring blood flow and preventing a stroke. “Carotid artery disease is a silent threat that can lead to catastrophic strokes, but with interventional neurology, we now offer safer, faster, and more effective treatment options,” said Dr. Ganaie.
Another groundbreaking case involved Basheer Ahmad, a 68-year-old patient who faced vision loss and severe headaches due to a large pituitary tumor. Dr. Basharat Ahmad Kanth, Associate Director of Neurosurgery, along with Dr. Danish Andrabi, Senior Consultant in ENT & Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery, and Dr. Azhar Khalid Bhat, Associate Consultant in Neurosurgery, performed a minimally invasive Endoscopic Trans-Nasal Trans-Sphenoidal (TNTS) Pituitary Tumor Excision. The procedure led to a complete removal of the tumor and restoration of the patient’s vision, with no postoperative complications.
The ENT & Skull Base Surgery team also saved the life of 51-year-old Naseema Akhter, diagnosed with a giant ruptured left ICA aneurysm. Dr. Ganaie led the team in performing a Flow Diverter-Assisted Aneurysm Coiling, which stabilized the patient, leading to a full recovery. Dr. Gautam Das, Zonal Director of Paras Health, highlighted, “These cases reflect our commitment to providing advanced neurosurgical solutions in Kashmir, such as DSA, aneurysm coiling, endoscopic tumor excision, and carotid angioplasty.”
Paras Health Srinagar’s Stroke Clinic provides comprehensive support, with 24/7 emergency services to treat stroke and neurological emergencies within the critical ‘golden hour.’ Equipped with state-of-the-art technology like CT and MRI, the hospital is redefining stroke and brain care in Kashmir, ensuring timely, minimally invasive treatments that save lives.
