Srinagar, Jan 16: A team of doctors at Paras Health, Srinagar, led by Dr. Azhar Jan Battoo, Associate Director of Surgical Oncology, successfully performed a thyroidectomy on a patient diagnosed with thyroid cancer, utilizing cutting-edge Nerve Monitoring and Autofluorescence technology.
The surgery, which was conducted for the first time in the Valley, not only ensured the removal of the cancerous thyroid gland but also significantly minimized potential post-operative complications, setting a new standard for thyroid cancer care in the region. Nerve Monitoring and Autofluorescence technology helps reduce the incidence of voice changes and decreased calcium levels after thyroid surgery.
Reflecting on the successful procedure, Dr. Azhar Jan Battoo, Associate Director – Surgical Oncology at Paras Health Srinagar, said, “The integration of Autofluorescence and Nerve Monitoring technology in thyroid surgery marks a significant leap in patient care. These advancements allow us to provide safer surgeries, quicker recoveries, and better long-term outcomes for our patients. We are proud to bring such innovations to the region, setting new benchmarks in thyroid cancer treatment.”
Paras Health, Srinagar, has been at the forefront of advanced thyroid cancer care, offering state-of-the-art imaging, pathology, and highly equipped operation theatres. Recently, the hospital introduced Autofluorescence-assisted thyroid surgery alongside Nerve Monitoring devices. These technologies enhance surgical precision, reduce the risk of post-operative complications such as voice changes and calcium level imbalances, and ensure quicker recovery for patients.
The patient, Dr. Danish Shafi Malik (54), experienced a seamless recovery, demonstrating the efficacy of these advanced surgical approaches. As part of the hospital’s patient-centric practices, most thyroid surgery patients are discharged the day after surgery. Additionally, for patients residing within 25 kilometres of the hospital, day-care surgery options enable same-day discharge, significantly enhancing convenience. To date, Paras Health, Srinagar, has successfully conducted over 60 thyroid surgeries, using the Nerve Monitoring device, with six surgeries performed using innovative Autofluorescence technology. These advancements have reduced transient serum calcium complications to less than 5% and virtually eliminated permanent complications, compared to traditional methods where these rates are significantly higher.
The hospital management echoed this sentiment, emphasizing commitment to bringing world-class healthcare to Srinagar. “Paras Health Srinagar remains dedicated to adopting the latest advancements in medical technology, ensuring that patients in the region receive the best possible care. The successful implementation of Autofluorescence technology exemplifies our ongoing mission to improve outcomes and enhance the patient experience,” said Dr. Gautam Das, Zonal Director, Paras Health. With its continued focus on integrating advanced medical technologies, Paras Health Srinagar is establishing itself as a leader in thyroid cancer care, ensuring improved patient safety, recovery, and overall quality of life.
