Srinagar, May 02: The Pakistan Army violated the ceasefire agreement along the Line of Control (LoC) for the eighth consecutive night on Friday, initiating unprovoked small arms fire across several sectors in Jammu and Kashmir. No casualties were reported, defence officials said.
According to officials, firing was reported from Pakistani posts opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Naushera, and Akhnoor sectors. The Indian Army responded “in a calibrated and proportionate manner” to the provocation along the 740-kilometre-long de facto border.
“During the night of May 1–2, 2025, Pakistan Army posts resorted to unprovoked small arms firing across the Line of Control opposite multiple sectors of Jammu and Kashmir,” PRO Defence Lt Col Suneel Bartwal told Rising Kashmir. “Indian Army troops responded in a calibrated and proportionate manner,” he added.
The fresh exchange of fire follows a week of mounting cross-border tensions in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 civilian lives. The ongoing skirmishes come amid a broader pattern of tit-for-tat actions between the two nations, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty by India.
Sources said that Indian forward positions have been fortified with advanced surveillance technologies, including high-resolution night vision devices, ground sensors, thermal imagers, and smart fencing linked to real-time command and control systems.
“Modern surveillance tools give our troops an edge and allow for faster, more precise responses,” army sources said. These systems, they added, have played a critical role in detecting and foiling multiple infiltration attempts in recent months.
Earlier this week, ceasefire violations were also reported from parts of Rajouri and Poonch, raising fears of a broader escalation along the LoC. On Tuesday, Pakistani forces expanded the shelling to the Pargwal sector along the International Border in Jammu district.
