Pahalgam, a renowned tourist destination, witnessed an unprecedented surge in visitors during 2023, drawing crowds from across the globe, both for its captivating scenery and religious significance.
According to data, the tourist haven hosted a staggering 8.04 lakh domestic tourists, with an additional 14,000 international visitors, and 6.17 lakh locals reveling in its natural beauty. The Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra (SANJY) pilgrimage contributed significantly to this surge, with a massive influx of 2 lakh pilgrims reaching Pahalgam. As the year concluded, the total count of tourists soared to an impressive 16.36 lakhs.
The Deputy Commissioner of Anantnag, Syeed Fakhrudin Hamid, leading the District Administration, collaborated with various stakeholders to ensure a warm welcome for the influx of tourists. DC Anantnag expressed satisfaction, saying, “The Tourism Department, CEO Pahalgam Development Authority, and other stakeholders have worked tirelessly to establish Pahalgam as an all-season spot for tourists.” He emphasized the role of the local community, stating, “The beauty of Pahalgam lies within its people.”
To further stimulate the local economy and promote tourism, 432 home stays were registered in Anantnag in 2023, revealed DC Anantnag.
Jahid Azad, Assistant Director Tourism, Pahalgam, highlighted the department’s efforts in promoting winter visits. “Under the directives of LG Manoj Sinha and the supervision of the Chief Secretary, a series of events were organized, yielding tremendous results evident from this year’s tourist influx,” he said.
Discussing future plans, Azad mentioned a shift towards winter adventure activities to make South Kashmir’s tourist destinations more vibrant and visitor-friendly. “We introduced ATV/Snow bikes, and a notice has been issued to locals to apply for permissions to operate such facilities in the Pahalgam area,” he added.
Local social activist Imaad Mir expressed optimism about the region’s tourism industry. “Record-breaking tourist numbers bode well for the region, promising continued growth and allure in the years to come. We are hopeful the number will continue to rise, and we have all-season business going smoothly for the welfare of stakeholders dependent on tourism,” said Mir. He acknowledged the efforts of local service providers, stating, “Pony Wallas and Taxi Association have done a phenomenal job throughout the year to provide the best services to visiting tourists.”
