Baramulla, May 20: In a significant operation, police in Baramulla apprehended a notorious timber smuggler and recovered 10 planks of illicit timber from him in the Bijhama area of Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
A police official said that a police party led by Shokat Ali-JKPS, SDPO Uri, who was assisted by Inspector Mudasir Nazar, SHO Police Station Bijhama, successfully apprehended a notorious timber smuggler, Mohammed Shafi Dar son of Abdul Razzaq Dar, a resident of Lachipora Bijhama.
“He was actively engaged in the illegal cutting down of forest timber and profiting from its sale at exorbitant prices,” the official said.
He said that acting on a tip-off, the Baramulla Police conducted a targeted operation in the Bijhama area, resulting in the recovery of 10 illicit wooden planks of forest timber from Dar’s possession. “The seized timber, suspected to be sourced from protected forests, represents a significant blow to the illicit timber trade in the region,” he added.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Forest Act at the Police Station Bijhama, the official said, adding that further investigation is underway.
