Srinagar, June 21: The National Institute of Technology, (NIT) Srinagar on Wednesday celebrated the 9th International Day of Yoga and more than 400 participants performed yoga with zeal and zest on the campus.
The event was organized by the Department of Physical Education at Common Hall and function was presided over by Director NIT Srinagar Prof. (Dr.) Sudhakar Yedla, who was Chief Guest on the occasion.
Registrar Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari, Dean Students Welfare NIT Srinagar Prof. Abdul Liman and Heads of departments, teaching and non-teaching staff and students from various departments also attended the mega event.
The Department of Physical Education distributed Yoga T-Shirts among the participants. The event began formally at 6:30 AM and was coordinated by two trainers from Yoga Society of Kashmir.
In his key address, Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Yedla said Yoga promotes physical fitness and overall well-being.
He also appreciated the Department of Physical Education for celebrating the International Yoga Day and for making the best possible arrangements for the day.
Later Prof. Yedla also felicitated the Yoga Trainers including Saima Farooq and Zahid Manzoor.
This year’s theme for Yoga Day is “Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” which beautifully encapsulates the collective aspiration for “One Earth, One Family, One Future.”
Institute’s Registrar, Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari said Yoga is an invaluable gift of ancient Indian tradition and it has emerged as one of the most trusted means to boost physical and mental well-being.
Prof. Bukhari said Yoga is known for its positive impact on mental health. It helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression by promoting relaxation and a sense of calm, he added.
Dean Students Welfare, NIT Srinagar, Prof. Liman said yoga offers a comprehensive system for nurturing physical, mental, and spiritual health.
“We should not restrict Yoga to 21st May, but should make it a daily routine in our lives. Students should make it part of their lives,” he said.
The National Cadet Corps (NCC)’s girls unit of NIT Srinagar also participated actively in Yoga Day Celebrations.
The idea of the Yoga Day was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014, during his speech at the UN General Assembly, where a resolution to establish June 21 as International Yoga Day was introduced.
