Budgam, Sept 08: Dr Mohammad Shafi Wani, former MLA of Beerwah and the National Conference (NC) candidate for the Beerwah assembly constituency, expressed confidence in the strength of his party, particularly among the youth, as he prepares for the upcoming assembly elections.
Speaking at a gathering in Beerwah, Wani said the National Conference is consistent in its opposition to the BJP in various forums, including the Parliament of India.
“The National Conference is one of the few parties in Jammu and Kashmir that has consistently raised its voice against the BJP, even in the Parliament of India. Our Member of Parliament has made it clear to the Prime Minister that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are not subservient,” he added.
Addressing reporters, Dr Wani said many new members, particularly young individuals from Beerwah, are joining the NC, not just the party’s existing base. “The youth of Beerwah are the strength and future of Jammu and Kashmir, and rival political parties will find it difficult to compete against them,” he said.
When asked about jailed Sarjan Barkati’s decision to contest against him in the elections, Dr Shafi said he (Barkati) has a right to run. “I am confident that the well-informed electorate of Beerwah would continue their support for the National Conference,” he said.
“It is every citizen’s democratic right to contest elections. However, I am hopeful that the people of Beerwah will again support the National Conference, as they have in the past,” he said.
