Anantnag/Kulgam, Nov 01: Separate fire incidents in the twin districts of Anantnag and Kulgam on Friday damaged a mosque and several residential buildings.
Fire fighters later brought the blazes under control, though the properties sustained considerable damage.
In Anantnag, the fire erupted from a mosque and a three-story building in Nandpora Khanabal, approximately one kilometer from Lal Chowk. The flames caused extensive damage to both the mosque and the adjoining residential structure.
In Kulgam’s Daderkoot village, a fire broke out in a residential building and quickly spread, affecting two adjacent homes.
Fire and emergency officials said multiple fire incidents were reported across the area throughout the day, involving haystacks, garbage, and other residential properties.
“There were several fires during the day. In Bijbehara, a single-story house caught fire but was brought under control. However, the fire in Anantnag was intense and required considerable effort to contain,” said a fire and emergency official.
In Kulgam, the fire severely damaged the residences of Reyaz Ahmad Dar and Aejaz Ahmad, sons of Sonaullah Dar, as well as that of Javaid Ahmad, son-in-law of Mohammad Akram Sofi, and a shop owned by Mohammad Amin Shah, son of Mohammad Yaqoob. The fire incidents in Daderkoot occurred during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.
Local residents told Rising Kashmir that the affected families in Kulgam are struggling to make ends meet, and rebuilding their homes will be a Herculean task. They have appealed to the administration and the MLA of Kulgam for immediate assistance.
They added that with winter approaching, it is crucial for the authorities to help them rebuild their homes on humanitarian grounds as soon as possible.
