Udhampur, Jan 12: Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Udhampur East, Ranbir Singh Pathania on Sunday expressed deep concern over the rampant drug abuse plaguing the youth of the nation.
Citing a statement by Union Home Minister Amit Shah that 7 per cent of the Indian population is involved in drug consumption, Pathania pointed out the dangerous consequences this has on individuals, families, and society at large.
Addressing a religious congregation in village Kuperla, Tehsil Udhampur, Pathania directly blamed the growing menace of drugs on anti-national elements and narco-terrorism, which he said are systematically destroying the future of the youth and the economy of a “rising” India.
He stressed that narcotic drugs are not only a threat to public health but also to national security, with criminal networks and terrorist groups using the trade as a tool to destabilize societies and weaken nations.
“The challenge India faces is twofold. On one side, we are positioned between the Golden Triangle—the region notorious for opium production—and the Golden Crescent, known for heroin production. With such proximity to major global drug hubs, our country faces an unprecedented onslaught of narcotics, undermining our social fabric and national security,” Pathania stated.
The MLA further highlighted the devastating consequences drug addiction has on individuals and families. He noted that addiction has led to the destruction of countless lives, broken families, and a significant increase in health-related issues. Moreover, the economic toll of drug abuse is staggering, with a rising number of young people sidelined from contributing productively to society. “We cannot afford to lose another generation to drugs,” he said.
Turning his attention to Udhampur district, the BJP leader shared the alarming rise in drug addiction within the region, which has already claimed many young lives. He acknowledged the urgent need for collective action, both from civil society and law enforcement. “This battle is not just about policing; it is about awakening our society to the perils of drug addiction and the need for active involvement. We need to ensure our children are not only educated in academics but also in moral values that foster resilience against such vices.”
The MLA called for a comprehensive approach that includes moral education in schools, where children are taught the importance of self-discipline, respect for life, and the dangers of drug abuse. “Our education system must empower our youth with knowledge and values to make the right choices, both in academics and in life,” he emphasised.
Pathania urged parents, particularly those whose children are already affected by addiction, to come forward, acknowledge the problem, and take decisive action by enrolling them in de-addiction programs. He also highlighted the crucial role of community awareness and support in the rehabilitation process.
In his address, Pathania praised local religious leaders, especially Sh Jagdish Ji Maharaj, for their pivotal role in initiating a campaign against alcoholism in the region. He commended the temple for serving as a beacon of hope and guidance for individuals seeking a way out of addiction. “Religious institutions and spiritual leaders can play a pivotal role in providing the moral compass and support that our communities desperately need in these difficult times,” he stated.
