Ganderbal:- The Shallabugh wetlands sprawling across thousands of kanals from Takenwari Srinagar to Sangan in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, are currently playing host to a notable influx of migratory birds from far-off lands such as Siberia, China, and Japan.
This annual migration, occurring during the winter months, not only enhances the natural beauty of the region but also adds to its cultural richness.
Migratory birds, including those renowned from Hokersar, seek refuge in Shallabugh from freezing temperatures during their journey, showcasing their impressive natural aviation skills. The migration, marked by a delicate balance of flight length and height, has become a spectacle that captivates both locals and tourists alike.
Experts emphasize the crucial role these birds play in Kashmir’s ecological system and encourage the community to cherish and protect them.
Wildlife Warden Wetlands, Ifshan Dewan, stated, “We expect 10 to 13 lakh migratory birds to arrive this year, continuing their stay from October to March. Last year witnessed 12 lakh migratory birds, underscoring the region’s significance as a wintering and breeding ground for various waterfowl species.”
To safeguard the avian visitors from poaching threats, control rooms have been activated at six strategic locations.
He highlighted that the wetlands serve as a vital stopover and wintering area for migratory Amatidae, contributing significantly to the valley’s diverse birdlife.
Mohd Ashraf Kabli, the Range Officer for Shallabugh, acknowledged that the current bird population is relatively low due to cold weather conditions. However, he expressed optimism, stating, “As the weather improves, we anticipate a notable increase in the bird population. We expect around 10 to 12 lakh birds, making the upcoming influx significant.”
The annual migration to Shallabugh stands not only as a testament to the region’s ecological importance but also as a celebration of nature’s wonders, providing a unique spectacle for all who appreciate the harmony between wildlife and their habitats.
