Kargil, Mar 20: Hundreds of demonstrators flooded the streets of Kargil city on Wednesday, amplifying their voices for the fulfillment of Ladakh’s four-point demands, with a primary focus on achieving statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Spearheaded by the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), an alliance comprising various political parties, religious communities, and civil societies, the protest rally navigated through the city’s main thoroughfare, culminating at Hussaini Park.
Addressing the impassioned crowd at Hussaini Park, prominent leaders including KDA Co-Chairmen Asgar Ali Karbalai and Qambar Ali Akhoon, Vice-Chairman of IKMT Sheikh Hassanain Rizwani, and representatives from Jamiat Ulema Isna Ashriya Kargil, like Sajjad Hussain Kargili, voiced their solidarity with the movement.
Asgar Ali Karbalai, amidst fervent cheers, declared a hunger strike slated from March 24 to 27 in Kargil under the auspices of the KDA, urging the public to join en masse. Expressing concerns over alleged government agendas to strip statehood from regions with populations under 1 crore, Karbalai rallied for broader support, emphasizing the need to halt such trends nationwide.
In a poignant reference to Sonam Wangchuk’s ongoing hunger strike in Leh, Qambar Ali Akhoon cautioned against the potential consequences of neglecting Wangchuk’s deteriorating health, squarely placing the responsibility on the government’s shoulders.
