Kulgam, Jan 23: A market checking drive was conducted in Kulgam district on Thursday, during which two shops were sealed and a fine of ₹20,000 was imposed on shopkeepers found violating norms.
Bilal Ahmad, Tehsildar Kulgam, told Rising Kashmir that the drive was conducted across the tehsil, particularly in the town, to ensure that shoppers receive genuine products at fair prices.
“During the drive, two shops were sealed as they were found in violation of the prescribed laws,” he said. “We also collected Rs 20,000 in fines from various shops that were not adhering to the law and failed to maintain hygiene and other required standards.”
Tehsildar added that rotten fruits and vegetables were destroyed on the spot during the inspection of vegetable sellers.
The drive was conducted in collaboration with the police, Food Safety Department, CAPD, Legal Metrology and the municipal authorities.
“We are committed to ensuring that shoppers receive genuine, quality products at fair rates and that profiteering is curbed,” he added.
Meanwhile, Kulgam Police in a statement said that they conducted a market checking drive along with civil administration.
Police said, “In order to keep a check on overpricing, profiteering and black marketing, intensive market checking was carried out by Kulgam Police along with Civil administration at various markets of District Kulgam including Main Town Kulgam, Manzgam and Yaripora to ensure all essential commodities are sold at Government approved rates and as per the quality standards.”
