Srinagar, Jan 18: In a significant move to enhance security and safety at religious sites in Srinagar, Darakshan Andrabi, the Chairperson of the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board, Saturday said that all major shrines in the city are now under CCTV surveillance.

This decision, she said, aims to provide an added layer of protection for both the devotees and the sacred places.

Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Andrabi said the step has been taken to ensure that these religious sites remain safe from threats and that visitors can worship in peace without concerns over safety. The installation of CCTV cameras across prominent shrines, including those visited by thousands of pilgrims every year, is expected to significantly improve monitoring, response time and overall safety.

In addition to the CCTV surveillance, Andrabi also highlighted the necessity of fire safety audits for all major shrines. She said that fire hazards, particularly in areas with high foot traffic and valuable heritage could pose a significant risk to both life and property. As part of this safety initiative, the Waqf Board has worked with local fire safety experts to carry out thorough audits of fire exits, alarms, extinguishers and electrical installations at the shrines.

“This is a much-needed step to ensure the safety of all visitors and the protection of our historical shrines. We are committed to implementing stringent measures that safeguard both the lives of devotees and the sanctity of these sacred spaces,” Andrabi said.

The move has been welcomed by the local community, religious leaders and security agencies, who have long called for improved infrastructure to prevent potential threats to these revered sites.
