Srinagar, Aug 02: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested 651 drug peddlers, including 122 hard-core peddlers booked under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act, as of July 2024, officials said.
A police official stated that under the aegis of the Drug-Free Baramulla campaign and continuing its action against the drug menace since January, police have registered 375 cases under the NDPS Act and arrested 651 drug peddlers, including 122 hard-core peddlers booked under the PIT NDPS Act.
“Contraband worth approximately ₹86.5 crores has been seized. Police have also attached illegal drug properties of 20 notorious drug peddlers worth ₹10 crores, comprising residential houses, shopping complexes, vehicles, and land plots,” he added.
The properties were primarily acquired from illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances by the drug peddlers, the official said.
The police official urged community members to come forward with any information regarding drug peddling in their neighborhoods. “Persons found indulging in drug peddling will be dealt with as per law. Our consistent actions against drug peddlers should reassure the community that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drug menace,” he added.
Meanwhile, police reported a sharp dip in heroin abuse cases in Baramulla district.
