Srinagar, Dec 15: With the successful hosting of Winter Games in Gulmarg and other parts of the Kashmir Valley in previous years, there is a growing demand for similar events in the Bangus Valley, also known as the “mirror of heaven on earth.”
Locals are urging the government to conduct the Winter Games on a trial basis, citing the Bangus Valley’s untapped potential and accessibility even during harsh winters.
Shahzad Ahmad, a resident of Handwara, told Rising Kashmir that the recent completion of roads connecting Bangus Valley from Handwara and Kupwara has made the untapped valley more accessible. “The government has long promised to promote Bangus Valley as a tourist and sports destination. Now is the time to fulfil that promise by organizing the Winter Games here,” Ahmad said.
Highlighting the unique weather conditions of the valley, he added, “Last year, when most of the Kashmir Valley saw minimal snowfall, Bangus was one of the few places covered in snow. This makes it an ideal location for winter sports.”
The sentiment is echoed by sports enthusiasts and locals alike. Iqbal Hussain, an athlete from Kupwara, expressed optimism about the prospects. “We hope the government will take a step forward this year by organizing small-scale games in Bangus Valley. This will not only help in promoting the valley locally and internationally but also provide opportunities for young athletes to showcase their talent,” he said.
The potential of Bangus Valley has not gone unnoticed. A recent visit by a group of tourists drew widespread praise for the Bangus Valley’s beauty and accessibility. “We were mesmerized by the serene landscapes of Bangus Valley. It is perfect for hosting winter sports and events,” remarked one of the visitors.
An official from the Kupwara district added that the Bangus is well-prepared to host such events. “If the government decides to organize Winter Games here, there is no reason it cannot happen successfully.”
Locals also see this as an opportunity to boost the economy. “Winter Games will bring not only recognition to the Bangus valley but also a livelihood for hundreds of families,” said Abdul Rahim, a shopkeeper in Handwara.
The people of Kupwara remain hopeful that 2024 will mark the beginning of a new chapter, putting the Bangus Valley on the map for winter sports and tourism.
