Jammu, June 30: To safeguard consumer interests—especially those of Shri Amarnath Ji pilgrims—the Legal Metrology Department of Jammu and Kashmir has intensified its market inspections in Kathua district, a vital transit corridor for Yatris. The special enforcement drive was conducted under the direction of Controller Legal Metrology, J&K, Rajinder Singh Tara.As per a statement issued here, carried out along the national highway, the drive aimed to ensure fair trade practices and strict adherence to the Legal Metrology Act, 2009. During the inspections, multiple traders were found violating various provisions of the Act and associated rules. As a result, penalties totalling Rs 1.40 lakh were imposed by area inspectors. The department emphasised the mandatory use of certified weighing instruments and warned against short-weight sales, particularly in high-demand items such as sweets, bakery goods, snacks, beverages, and pre-packaged food products—staples during the pilgrimage season. In an official statement, the department urged consumers to remain vigilant and to examine pre-packaged goods carefully for key labelling details, including the manufacturers or importer’s address, country of origin, net quantity, and Maximum Retail Price (MRP), inclusive of all taxes. Accurate labelling ensures transparency and protects buyers from deceptive practices.
