Legacy of Muran family hailed for their contribution to walnut carving craft

Srinagar, Dec 01: A function was held to celebrate the 200-year legacy of the Muran family, honoring their outstanding contributions to the art of walnut wood carving.
The event featured notable speakers, including poet Zarief Ahmad Zarief, who remarked, “The Muran Family has not only preserved a craft but has also woven the essence of our culture into every piece they create.”
Saleem Beigh, a member of the National Monuments Authority, added, “Their craftsmanship is a testament to the dedication and artistry that has been passed down through generations.” He said that as a society Kashmir needs to felicitate the craftsmen.
Prominent hotelier Mushtaq Chaya emphasized the importance of this legacy, stating, “The Muran Family’s work is not just about wood; it’s about storytelling and heritage.”
Among others Deputy Director Handicrafts Shahid Ali, also addressed the gathering.
During the celebration, the present generation of the Muran Family, represented by Muhammad Yousuf Muran and Mudasir Muran, was felicitated by several dignitaries, including Sheikh Ashiq, Sheikh Feroz Al Khuddam CEO , and eminent politician Inam Ul Nabi, Hatrick Group Chairman Chowdary, Rouf Panjabi, Faiz Khan , Rafiq AD DC Handicrafts , Manzoor Pakhtoon, Aqib Chaya parwaiz Bhat and among others.
Besides several other diverse personalities, Eminent journalist Bilal Bashir Bhat, along with Rameez Makdoomi and Kurshied Qureshi, read a citation in honor of Paradise Wood House, a franchise run by the Muran Family. The citation highlighted their commitment to excellence and innovation in wood carving.
Veteran journalist Riyaz Masroor expertly led the proceedings of the event. Attendees were treated to a showcase of masterpieces, celebrating the golden hands of the Muran artisans.
The gathering was a heartfelt tribute to a family that has become synonymous with the rich tradition of walnut wood carving in Jammu and Kashmir.
The grand celebratory function was held at Sangarmal Complex Srinagar followed by a lavish lunch by Bandari’s.
