Srinagar, Nov 26: The Lakes Conservation and Management Authority (LC&MA) is going to restore around thirteen navigation channels in the coming months, with work on five channels already going on in full swing.
An official of LC&MA said that as many as 13 navigation channels were identified, and they will all be restored after a gap of one day. “Currently the men and machinery are in action to restore the five channels and after wards, the work will be started in the remaining channels.”
The department has identified several channels, including Tengbagh to Bakhuri Mohalla, Tengbagh to Aanchari Mohalla, Jalla Mohalla to Shamshan Ghat, Imam Bareh Hassan Abad to Gurpora, and Babademb outflow channel, whose existing depth is 2 to 3 feet.
As per the LCMA, these channels were filled with silt and waste during the devastating floods of 2014, and since then they have remained in the same condition.
People who live on the banks of these channels, on the other hand, have repeatedly complained about the foul odour. The department took serious note of their grievances and initiated the desalination drive across the city channels.
The department is giving around 8–9 feet of depth to these navigation channels, so they would not get shallow in a short time. At present, the department will be cleaning these navigation channels, which measure around 8.711 kilometres.
The department believes that after the work is completed, the water flow of these streams will be high, which will provide a sigh of relief to the people living on the banks of these channels.
Meanwhile, the people living on the banks of these channels have hoped that the restoration work on these channels will be completed soon, which will provide them with a sigh of relief.
Bashir Ahmad, a local of Dalgate, said the restoration work on these navigation channels was a long-pending demand of the people.
