Kulgam, Apr 01: Authorities in south Kashmir’s Kulgam have warned the locals to destroy the illicit poppy within five days or face legal action.
The order comes as part of the government’s ban on the cultivation of harmful and illegal substances, including cannabis and poppy, under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Tehsildar Kulgam Bilal Ahmad issued the directive in a bid to clamp down on illegal drug cultivation.
According to the order, all Kulgam Tehsil residents have been advised to refrain from engaging in such unlawful and illegal activities. “I any person is found to be involved in this type of serious crime, strict legal action (imprisonment) will be initiated against him,” the order states, adding that those who have done such cultivation in their lands should dispose of it within five days.
“Those who do not comply will face severe legal consequences,” the order warns.
Tehsildar Damhal Hanjipora issued a similar order, giving three days to locals to destroy cannabis.
Meanwhile, 21 kanals of illicit poppy cultivation were destroyed by the teams of Revenue and Excise in the jurisdiction of Tehsil Kulgam.
