Zanskar, Jan 12: The Kargil Renewable Energy Development Agency (KREDA) has brought a transformative change to the Zanskar region by ensuring uninterrupted power supply during the harsh winter months.
The newly commissioned Small Hydro Project (SHP) at Raru, with a capacity of 2 MW, has been operational since December 2024, providing reliable electricity even as temperatures plummet to -24 degrees Celsius.
KREDA’s other hydro projects, including SHP Biaras (1.5 MW) and SHP Chilong (1 MW), are also functioning efficiently, further strengthening the region’s energy infrastructure. These projects have been instrumental in maintaining a stable power supply, bringing much-needed relief to the local population and boosting economic activities despite the freezing conditions.
Speaking to the media, KREDA Project Director Kacho Ahmad Khan revealed that the agency is selling power to the Ladakh Power Development Department (LPDD), generating annual revenue of ₹1.5 to ₹2 crore. This makes KREDA the sole revenue-generating entity for the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil, highlighting its pivotal role in the region’s development.
Khan credited the success to the relentless efforts of KREDA employees, who work tirelessly to ensure that the hydro projects remain operational in challenging conditions.
