Residents report erratic billing & unscheduled power cuts
JPDCL Chief Engineer denies major power issues
Jammu, Aug 02: Amid an intense heatwave, Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited (JPDCL) consumers are expressing dissatisfaction over unscheduled power cuts and fluctuations, despite assurances of 24×7 electricity in smart meter-equipped areas.
Residents report frequent outages that defy JPDCL’s promises. “The unscheduled power cuts and fluctuations are unbearable in this intense heat,” said one local. “The department has failed to deliver the reliable electricity they promised.”
The severe heatwave has worsened the situation, particularly for those relying on air conditioning or fans. “We are forced to use generators to cope with the extreme temperatures,” another resident noted.
However, JPDCL’s Chief Engineer, Mahahar Gupta, denied significant power issues, stating that while minor problems occur, they are addressed promptly. He said there is no significant supply-demand gap. Gupta acknowledged past issues with the smart meter system but assured that a new system has been implemented to improve service.
In addition to power issues, discrepancies in billing have emerged. Rahul from Bari Brahmana reported erratic charges since smart meters were installed, with bills varying from ₹35 to ₹3000. “The inconsistency in billing is troubling,” he said.
Consumers have previously raised these concerns with JPDCL. Despite the cancellation of some power schedule cuts, the situation remains unchanged. “We are frustrated with the department’s failure to meet their promises,” a resident complained.
Residents also criticise the department’s ongoing infrastructure upgrades, which they claim have not alleviated the problems. Delays in bill delivery and uncertainty over usage units contribute to their frustration.
Another resident Anu, a resident of Lower Thathar, Bantalab, expressed frustration over persistent power cuts and fluctuations, which occur every half hour and last for hours. The extended outages have become intolerable during the hot and humid summer months. She also said that there are issues with the PDD helpline, “stating that calls are often met with disconnected numbers or continuous engagement. When calls are answered, the responses are described as unhelpful and the questions asked seem irrelevant”.
