Srinagar, Feb 13: Jammu & Kashmir has recorded an increase of 91.25 square kilometers in forest and tree cover in two years, according to the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2023, released by the Forest Survey of India.
As per the data available, the total forest cover in the Union Territory is now 25,013.36 square kilometers, showing the impact of afforestation efforts and conservation programs in the UT.
The ISFR 2023 also said that India’s overall forest and tree cover has increased by 1,445 square kilometers since 2021. J&K is among the states and Union Territories that have contributed to this positive trend.
Officials attribute the growth to government-backed plantation drives, conservation policies, and strict monitoring of deforestation activities. J&K has witnessed various afforestation efforts under national and state-level programs. Conservation of eco-sensitive areas, particularly in the Kashmir Valley and Pir Panjal range, has also played role in increasing green cover.
Authorities have also taken measures to prevent illegal encroachments and deforestation, ensuring that forests remain protected.
They said that J&K’s diverse ecosystem, which includes alpine forests, wetlands, and grasslands, plays a good role in carbon absorption, biodiversity conservation, and climate regulation.
The increase in forest cover contributes to maintaining ecological balance, supporting wildlife habitats, and reducing environmental risks, they added.
Despite the positive developments, challenges remain in maintaining J&K’s forest cover as rapid urbanization and infrastructure projects have led to deforestation in some areas with human activities such as illegal logging and land encroachments also pose a threat.
The report also said that the government has been urged to strengthen forest conservation policies and involve locals in protection efforts as sustainable tourism, eco-friendly policies, and afforestation drives are seen as key solutions to preserve J&K’s natural resources.
