Srinagar, Sept 7: Indian Railways, in partnership with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), has launched authentic local vegetarian meals on the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express from Sunday.
The initiative aims to promote the rich culinary heritage of Jammu and Kashmir and provide passengers with a unique regional experience during their journey. The new menu is available on train numbers 26401, 26402, 26403, and 26404 running between Katra and Srinagar.
Passengers boarding at Katra were served traditional Dogra and Kashmiri dishes, including Jammu Paratha, Babroo, Ambal Kaddu, Kashmiri Kahwa, Kashmiri Dum Aloo, Paneer Chaman, Jammu Rajma, and Kashmiri Pulao. Locally sourced apples accompany the meals, which are prepared using traditional spices and cooking methods.
IRCTC Chairman Harjot Singh Sandhu said the move was designed to give travellers an “authentic and memorable” taste of the region even before they reach their destination.
Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Jammu Division, said the meals would be served in hygienic, eco-friendly packaging, with professional supervision ensuring quality.
“Meals will be served in airline-style Teflon-coated casseroles and eco-friendly coir trays in place of plastic. Professional supervisors will oversee the operations, and staff have been specially trained to maintain high standards of preparation and service,” he said.
Railway officials emphasised that while the regional menu will be the highlight of the service, traditional vegetarian options such as upma, poha and cutlets will continue to remain available for passengers who prefer them.
The Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6 this year, marked a major milestone by connecting Srinagar with the national railway network.
The train began commercial operations the following day with IRCTC’s standard menu. With the introduction of local cuisine, officials said the Railways is taking forward its commitment to celebrate India’s cultural and culinary diversity through its services.
The initiative is also expected to benefit local farmers and food suppliers, as ingredients such as vegetables, spices, apples and bakery products will be sourced from within Jammu and Kashmir.
Officials said this would help generate livelihood opportunities and boost the region’s agrarian economy.
