Srinagar, Dec 14: The Jammu and Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation has cleared ₹12,720 crore in legacy dues since 2022.
As per the data, the Union Territory owed ₹14,164 crore in overdue payments as of June 2022. By December 2024, this amount was reduced to ₹1,444 crore.
This dues was cleared under the Electricity (Late Payment Surcharge and Related Matters) Rules, 2022, which allowed power dues to be rescheduled and paid in equated monthly instalments starting August 2022.
In the financial year 2023-24, the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) collected ₹911 crore, while Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (JPDCL) generated ₹1,378 crore with the two discoms achieved ₹2,289 crore in revenue.
For the ongoing financial year (April to October 2024), KPDCL collected ₹1,151 crore, and JPDCL generated ₹1,661 crore with the combined revenue of ₹2,812 crore.
An official told Rising Kashmir that multiple initiatives have been taken to improve revenue collection in both discoms.
He said that the installation of Smart Meter Installation have minimized power theft and ensured accurate billing. Public outreach programs have encouraged timely payments and increased awareness of energy conservation, he said.
He also said that investments in modernising the distribution network have reduced losses and improved operational efficiency.
The official said that despite the progress, challenges such as aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses and pending consumer dues remain but both KPDCL and JPDCL are implementing solutions like digital billing, prepaid meters, and streamlined grievance redressal to tackle these issues.
He said that the government is committed to reforms to ensure transparency and improve operational capacity to achieve a steady revenue growth trajectory while maintaining reliable power supply across J&K.
