Awantipora, Aug. 11, Professor Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice Chancellor of the Islamic University of Science and Technology, inaugurated the campus sewage treatment facility today in the presence of various university officers.
The state-of-the-art sewage treatment facility has a treatment capacity of 100 KLD and has been constructed at a cost of about 75 lakhs to address wastewater treatment across the campus, including hostels accommodating students and scholars. This facility will safeguard local water resources, including the Jhelum River, from pollution.
The quality of the treated water meets drinking water standards and will be utilized for irrigation of university gardens and parks, general cleaning, and other purposes. As a result, this will help reduce the demand for freshwater sources on campus. This significant pollution control measure underscores the university’s commitment to sanitation and the sustainable utilization of dwindling water resources. Notably, IUST has implemented rooftop water harvesting mechanisms for all campus buildings.
Professor Shakil Ahmad Romshoo praised the Engineering Wing for completing the project on time and reaffirmed IUST’s dedication to environmental protection, cleanliness, and water conservation. He emphasized the essential need for a clean environment and outlined the roadmap for future progress in this direction. He highlighted IUST’s pursuit of a Carbon Neutral Campus and the active steps being taken to meet the university’s entire electricity demand through solar power, with plans to increase the capacity from the current 65 percent to 100 percent. Additionally, he conducted a review of ongoing construction projects and stressed the importance of their timely completion to ensure the smooth execution of academic and research activities on campus.
