Srinagar, Dec 14: Joint Commissioner of Income Tax, Srinagar, Rahul Padha on Thursday emphasized the importance of filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) honestly and on time.
He said this while chairing an interactive session and outreach program organized by the Income Tax Department in collaboration with the District Administration in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir. The program, which saw active participation from more than 250 Drawing and Disbursing Officers (DDOs), Account Officers, and government employees, aimed to educate attendees about various aspects of income tax compliance and to address queries related to tax provisions.
M.L Dogra, Income Tax Officer, Udhampur, initiated the proceedings by highlighting the significance of tax compliance and apprising the audience about the territorial jurisdiction of the Income Tax Department in their region.
Karamvir, Income Tax Officer, TDS Jammu & Srinagar, focused on educating DDOs and Account Officers about their roles and duties concerning Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) provisions. He stressed the need for timely filing of quarterly TDS returns to avoid late filing fees and penalties.
Ankit Dhaka, Tax Recovery Officer, Srinagar, addressed the issue of employees claiming deductions under various sections without proper verification. He urged DDOs to scrutinize documents submitted by employees for deductions thoroughly. Dhaka emphasized that proper documentary evidence, such as rent receipts, rent agreements, and PAN cards of landlords, should be verified to prevent bogus claims.
On concerns about past filing errors, DDOs were urged to encourage employees to revise their ITR before December 31, 2023, to rectify any mistakes related to the Financial Year 2022-23. Additionally, those who claimed erroneous refunds in previous years were advised to file Updated ITRs (ITR-U) for the Financial Years 2020-21 and 2021-22 by March 31, 2024, paying additional taxes as required.
Rahul Padha, in his closing remarks, encouraged attendees to file ITRs accurately and on time, highlighting the importance of honest tax payments for the nation’s progress. He assured taxpayers that the government has a robust grievance redressal mechanism, urging them to register grievances online for swift resolution.
The Income Tax Department expressed gratitude to the District Administration for their support and successful event coordination. The session concluded with a commitment to fostering tax compliance and addressing taxpayer concerns
