Srinagar, Dec 11: The Jammu and Kashmir tourism department on Sunday celebrated international mountain day here in Srinagar, in which scores of women mountaineers and a large number of people participated.
An official of the tourism department told Rising Kashmir that this year the theme of this event was “Women move mountains.”
She said women are integral to the sustainable development of mountain communities. To celebrate the resilience, endurance, and courage of these unsung warriors, the department held a function at TCR Srinagar, which received an overwhelming response from the public.
She continued, “The goal of organizing these events was to keep Kashmir Valley alive during the winter.”
In the coming days, several other programs will also be held in the Kashmir Valley to boost the tourism sector. Recently, the department organized a houseboat festival in which a large number of people participated.
Women move mountains. “It showcased the initiatives taken by the government to highlight our mountain systems and their communities, and the responsibility of each stakeholder in preserving the fragile ecosystems that are under tremendous stress from environmental hazards and pressures.”
There was a facilitation ceremony to honor the adventure tourism fraternity, our trekkers, and environmentalists, particularly the women who are at the forefront of such endeavours.
The Secretary to the Government Department of Tourism, J & K. Sarmad Hafeez, and the Director of Tourism, Fazlul Haseeb, while addressing the gathering, impressed upon the need to preserve and promote green tourism and asked the youth to take an active and responsible role in making our mountains safe and protected by being the harbingers of positive change.
In the coming week, the department, in collaboration with the Wildlife Department in Kashmir, will organize a bird-watching event in the valley, in which bird lovers will have the chance to watch guest birds that came from different parts of the world.
In addition, the department will also organize several other activities to make tourism vibrant in the Kashmir Valley, the senior official stated.
