Within days of taking over the reins of power in the United States of America (USA), President Donald Trump has made his intentions clear by operationalizing his policy towards the immigrants who are alleged to be working there illegally. Deportation of immigrants to their respective countries has started. Donald Trump had made it abundantly clear that he will not allow the immigrants to enjoy the resources at the cost of the rights of his people. In his earlier term it seemed that the USA was coming closer to India and had developed workable relations in various fields giving a new dimension to Indo-US bilateralism. Not only that, the two democracies went ahead to shape their common vision to counter Chinese hegemony in the Indo-Pacific region in order to balance the strategic calculus. This had generated a new hope for India as it was a shift from the traditional posturing of the Cold War politics that had divided the world into communist and capitalist zones. It is an open secret that during the Cold War Pakistan emerged as the front line beneficiary of the USA’s doing out of the resources and the outcome was the patronage of the terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir that devastated the lives and livelihood of the natives. But when this fleecing of US resources led to the development of international terrorism cartels and ended as a national security threat to the US, the outcome was the shift in the US policy towards Pakistan. Its South Asian policy witnessed recalibration and cultivation of strategy ties with India. It is an open secret that the US charts its foreign policy by giving primacy to the national interests. President Trump has proved it again. Deportation of 104 Indians back to India, who his administration has as illegal immigrants, has opened a Pandora’s Box. The US military aircraft landed in Amritsar on Wednesday amid tight security. Before that these immigrants were shown handcuffed while boarding them in the fight. This image had wounded the Indian psyche and created mistrust towards the US as far as the bilateral relations between the two nations are concerned. Even if the US has identified the Indian nationals overstaying and devoid of legal documents, it could have initiated the repatriation through the diplomatic channels. As the relations between the two nations are cordial. This step will surely impact the policy paradigm.Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been enjoying a good chemistry with President Trump. And now he is scheduled to visit the US again. It is in the interest of the two nations that a way out is formulated to mitigate the political crisis that can emerge.By sending the immigrants handcuffed and that too in a military aircraft is meant to send a stern message that the US is treating the Indian nationals as criminals.Earier the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had told the media that India and the United States are engaged in a process to deter illegal migration and cooperation between India and the U.S. is strong and effective in this domain. This will be evident in times to come. Both sides are engaged in a process to deter illegal migration, while also creating more avenues for legal migration from India to the U.S. The United States has identified 18,000 undocumented Indian migrants to be sent back.Time will tell what will unfold.
