India has been raising the voice for reorganisation of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a long time. It has been categorical about the need for the reformation of the global body and also about the monopoly of the powers that want to delay or stop the presence of India as the permanent member of the Security Council. India has also raised its finger towards China for stalling its entry into the Security Council as a permanent member stating the strategic interests of China to stop India’s rise. In the recent times India’s permanent representative at the United nations(UN) Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj has been ably articulating the need to induct India as the permanent member of the Security Council till her superannuation .Now the successor Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish has taken the charge to represent India as the permanent representative. India’s position has been vindicated by the statement of Dennis Francis, the President of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, whose tenure ended on Monday. While upholding India’s eligibility for the permanent seat in the Security Council he has said that India is an avid and committed advocate of multiculturalism. Besides, it is a thriving democracy of 1.4 billion people and thus it has a bright future towards making a strong contribution to global affairs. These characteristics make India very much valued for the United Nations(UN).It is in this light that he has said that India’s role will continue and get strengthened towards being the permanent member of the Security Council. To reinforce this, he said, “We know of course that India has an ambition to become a permanent member of the Security Council. Members will decide when they arrive at that point as to how to reform the Council and which members would be best placed to represent the current constellation of actors and the current distribution of power in the system. But for a democracy of 1.4 billion people, I’m sure no one overlooks the fact that India has a bright future in making a continued strong contribution to world affairs and in the realm of international affairs. So I imagine that pattern will continue to be demonstrated.” Francis has also acknowledged India’s contribution as an advanced developing country by sharing its expertise with other developing countries in the Global South with respect to South-South cooperation, especially digitalisation. Underlining the importance of digitalisation for the potential growth of the developing nations, he said, “And understandably so because digitalisation is the key to unlocking the potential that exists in countries. Digitalisation is as much an input to economic development as it is itself a contributor”.Now the ball is in the court of the UN to internalise that UNSC needs reformation so that member states that are contributing to the emerging new world must be involved for the betterment of the world. The monopoly of a select few will not add to the credibility of the world body but instead it will erode it. International change demands that not only multiculturalism but multipolarity be encouraged for the peace and development in the world. India has on many occasions shown that it can lead the world in bringing stability and peace. It has led to a crisis situation. Not only that, it has shown that when the world is facing economic slowdown ,it has maintained its GDP and economic stability. India as a permanent member at the UNSC will have to be a reality soon and the global peace and stability demands it at the earliest.
